Guillermo del Toro, Alfonso Cuarón criticize Oscars’ plan to hand out awards during commercials

Call it The Shape of WTF.

Director Guillermo del Toro has leant his support to cinematographers and editors following the Academy’s decision to give out their respective Oscars during commercials at this year’s ceremony.

“If I may: I would not presume to suggest what categories to cut during the Oscars show but – Cinematography and Editing are at the very heart of our craft,” wrote the filmmaker on Twitter. “They are not inherited from a theatrical tradition or a literary tradition: they are cinema itself.”

The Academy announced on Monday that the Oscars for cinematography, film editing, makeup and hairstyling, and live-action short, would be awarded during commercials.

Del Toro won Best Director at last year’s ceremony for The Shape of Water. In all, the movie was nominated for 13 Oscars, including both Best Achievement in Cinematography and Film Editing.

Alfonso Cuarón, a two-time Oscar winner whose film Roma is up for 10 awards at this year’s ceremony, also shared support for cinematographers and editors in a message on Twitter.

“In the history of CINEMA, masterpieces have existed without sound, without color, without a story, without actors and without music,” he wrote early Tuesday. “No one single film has ever existed without CINEMAtography and without editing.”

The 91st Academy Awards will be handed out on Feb. 24, in a ceremony airing live on ABC.
