Exclusive: Jon Cryer’s Lex Luthor is super-bitter in first Supergirl footage

Lex Luthor is out for blood — specifically Superman’s — in this exclusive new Supergirl promo.

Jon Cryer will make his debut as Superman’s arch nemesis in the 15th episode of season 4, titled “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” and airing Sunday, March 15, and you can watch the first footage of him in the video above. Based on the new trailer, this version of Lex, like previous ones, hates Superman with a burning passion.

“I want to see if the the Kryptonian pretender can bleed,” Lex in the new spot. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to his contempt for the Man of Steel. Elsewhere in the sneak peek, he yells, “I was the Man of Tomorrow! Not! Him!” And right before a judge renders a jury’s verdict, he says, “Superman made me do it.” Which is a totally reasonable response, right?

In Lex’s first episode, he’s secretly furloughed from prison (where he’s serving multiple life sentences for murder) because his health is failing and he needs his sister Lena’s (Katie McGrath) help to find a cure. If you know anything about Lex, you should expect there to be some kind of twist, because this man is almost always scheming.

“The character is not that dissimilar to what we’ve seen in canon,” co-showrunner and executive producer Jessica Queller told EW in January. “He just [has] a sparkle in his eye and is smarter than everybody in the room and 12 steps ahead of everyone, and just a large, delicious villain.”

Co-showrunner and EP Robert Rovner added, “He’s the biggest supervillain we’ve had on the show, and his plans will kind of touch every character and impact the entire season moving forward once he arrives.”

Elsewhere in “O Brother, Where Art Thou,” Kara (Melissa Benoist) and J’onn (David Harewood) must contend with Manchester Black (David Ajala), and James’ sister Kelly (Azie Tesfai) comes to town. “There are circumstances in James’ life that bring her town and then she ends up staying to both help James and pursue her own life,” said Rovner.

Supergirl airs Sundays at 8 p.m. on the CW.
