Edge of Tomorrow sequel in the works, Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt expected to return

Prepare to live, die, repeat all over again.

A sequel to 2014’s Edge of Tomorrow is in development at Warner Bros., EW has confirmed. Matthew Robinson has been brought on to write the script, with director Doug Liman and stars Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt expected to return.

Edge of Tomorrow starred Cruise as Major William Cage, a public relations officer with no training who is thrown on the frontlines of a war against aliens. He soon finds himself caught in a loop and being resurrected each time he’s killed. By Cage’s side is the badass Sgt. Rita Vrataski (Blunt), nicknamed the Angel of Verdun.

Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse were originally hired to write a script for a sequel, which Liman sounded very excited about in 2016. “The story is so amazing — much better than the original film, and I loved and loved the original film — and second of all, it’s a sequel that’s a prequel,” said Liman. “I had these intellectual ideas on how you should make a sequel that [is] unlike how anybody else makes a sequel, and this script and this idea fit perfectly into that idea. So it’s gonna revolutionize how people make sequels.”

Edge of Tomorrow 2 now goes on to Cruise’s growing list of upcoming sequels, joining Top Gun 2 and seventh and eighth installments of Mission: Impossible.

Deadline first reported the news.
