The CW orders first pilot starring a gender non-conforming character

The CW’s latest pilot order could make TV history.

On Friday the network ordered a new project which is focused on a gender non-conforming lead character.

In Glamorous, according to its logline, “a gender non-conforming recent high school graduate lands the gig of a lifetime interning at a cosmetics company whose products he panned on YouTube.”

The pilot is from writer Jordon Nardino (Desperate Housewives) and executive producer Damon Wayans Jr.

No other details have yet been released. But if the pilot is greenlit to series, it would likely be the first scripted U.S. show to have a gender non-conforming lead protagonist.

Previously, Showtime’s Billions cast Asia Kate Dillion in the first gender non-binary role on American scripted series television. Paramount’s scrapped reboot of Heathers also featured a gender non-conforming character as part of the ensemble cast.

Glamorous will have some competition for a slot on The CW’s schedule. The network is also shooting a pilot for Batwoman (with Ruby Rose as TV’s first lesbian superhero), The Lost Boys (a television update of the 1987 hit vampire movie), Katy Keene (a Riverdale spinoff following four Archie Comics characters), Jane the Novela (a telenovela anthology series in the tradition of Jane the Virgin) and a crime drama based off the Nancy Drew books.

Earlier this week, The CW renewed 10 shows for next season (and is still waiting to decide on a few others).
