The Awardist podcast: Oscars cap awards season with historic wins and unfinished business

From Green Book to Bohemian Rhapsody, Olivia Colman to Rami Malek, this year’s Oscar winners were all over the map.

The 91st Academy Awards delivered a number of history-making moments — from landmark wins for women and people of color to the first Oscars collected by the blockbuster factory Marvel Studios — but the ceremony also culminated in a polarizing Best Picture win for Green Book, a film criticized by some as retrograde in its handling of racial issues. (Is Green Book the new Crash or Driving Miss Daisy? Discuss.)

So will this be the year that we look back on as a genuine turning point for diversity in front of and behind the camera? Will Academy voters ever fully embrace movies that challenge where and how they watch a film — e.g., streaming — let alone make them uncomfortable?

Here to tackle those questions and more is this award season’s final installment of The Awardist podcast, hosted by EW digital director Shana Naomi Krochmal. This week Shana is joined by EW senior writer and Awardist columnist Piya Sinha-Roy and EW deputy editor Bill Keith to make sense of all this year’s Oscar drama, both on stage and behind the scenes.

And, like everyone else with eyes, they’ll ask: What in the world was going on with Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper during that “Shallow” performance? You don’t want to miss it.

The Awardist podcast is part of EW’s comprehensive awards coverage, online and in the magazine. Listen to the full discussion below, or on Apple PodcastsGoogle PlayStitcher, or wherever you get your podcasts.
