Ryan Reynolds teases new Detective Pikachu trailer with hilarious behind-the-role video

Leave it to Ryan Reynolds to find a new and hilarious way to tease an upcoming trailer.

On Monday, the actor tweeted a video of himself talking about taking on the role of the little yellow Pokémon in the upcoming live-action Detective Pikachu movie and how seriously he took the entire process. “You know, I lived it and I breathed it; I became the character,” he says very seriously — at times throughout the video he caresses a Poké Ball. “I spent the entire year as Detective Pikachu.”

Since playing the part was a “privilege” that he Reynolds didn’t take lightly, he admitted that every second of his energy was spent “making this character come alive with the same exacting standards that the most discerning fans would come to expect,” and shared one particularly telling anecdote. “I was on my way to pick up my daughters from school when I heard that I got the role; I didn’t show up at school because Detective Picachu, he doesn’t know who those two little girls are. Who are they?” At this point the video cuts to Reynold’s wife, Blake Lively, who interjects: “They’re our daughters. He just left them.”

Reynolds goes on to explain how he immersed himself completely in play the Pokémon detective, reading about him, living at his height and even trying to lose 182 pounds to match his weight, until doctors intervened. “The point is my daughters, they may never see their dad again but you can be damned sure that they’re going to be looking up at that screen this summer and they’re going to see Detective Pikachu,” he says triumphantly. To which Lively laughs, “They’re not going.”

The movie, directed by Rob Letterman (Goosebumps), takes place in Ryme City, a city where humans and Pokémon live side by side, and focuses on a young man’s (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom‘s Justice Smith) search for his cop father.

Watch Reynold’s trailer preview above before the new trailer arrives Tuesday. Detective Pikachu hits theaters May 10.
