Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper dove into their first televised performance of “Shallow” at Sunday’s Oscars.
The duo — both nominated as lead actors for their work in A Star Is Born — began the performance from their front-row seats in the audience, with Cooper (also the film’s director) leading Gaga to the Dolby Theatre stage by the hand. They then launched into an emotional rendition of the film’s signature hit, staring into each other’s eyes from across a brown piano for most of the song until Cooper joined Gaga atop the piano bench for a light embrace to close out the number.
A nine-time Grammy winner, Gaga additionally received the second and third Oscar nominations of her career for her contributions to A Star Is Born: one for Best Actress and the other for co-writing “Shallow” with Ronson, Miike Snow’s Andrew Wyatt, and Anthony Rossomando. She was previously nominated alongside Diane Warren for co-writing the song “Til It Happens to You” from the 2015 anti-rape documentary The Hunting Ground. Cooper has seven Oscar nominations across several films and categories over the years, including Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Adapted Screenplay.
Sunday’s performance of “Shallow” marked Gaga’s third time singing on the Oscars stage. She first performed at the annual ceremony in 2015, belting a medley of tunes from The Sound of Music in honor of the Julie Andrews-starring film’s 50th anniversary. The following year, survivors of sexual assault joined Gaga as she sang “Til It Happens to You” for the Oscars audience.
Though she hasn’t released a solo album since Joanne in 2016, Gaga told EW during an August 2017 interview that she’s currently working on her upcoming sixth studio effort — rumored to include collaborations with electronic musicians Sophie and Boys Noize.
“I’ve started writing,” Gaga said of the project, which is expected to debut at some point during her ongoing, multi-year Las Vegas residency that includes both the Enigma pop show and the traditional Jazz & Piano set. “I have a lot of ideas and a lot of things I want to create, so you’ll see in a bit. I need some time to create.”
