Groundhog Day gets a sequel… as a virtual reality game

Here’s some news that will surely spark a lot of feelings.

First, Groundhog Day, the classic comedy from Bill Murray, is getting an official sequel. That may be good or bad, depending on if you’re of the belief that some things in this world are just plain sacred. If that’s you, then maybe the second part of that reveal will soften the blow: it’s not a movie, it’s a virtual reality game.

Groundhog Day: Like Father Like Son is a “virtual reality adventure game” coming to major virtual reality platforms, including PlayStation Virtual Reality, later this year. The news arrived on Saturday, which marks Groundhog Day in 2019.

In the original film from 1993, Murray played Phil Connors, a weatherman finding himself trapped in a seemingly endless loop as he relived the same day over and over again. The VR sequel follows Phil Connors Jr., his “charming but arrogant” son, who’s trapped in his own time-loop in his hometown of Punxsutawney, a place he thought he escaped.

Through more than 8 hours of “hilarious puzzles and branching narrative gameplay,” it’s your goal to break the loop. The way to do that is by having Phil learn the true value of friends and family. Good luck with that.

“We are not developing a new Groundhog Day movie,” Jake Zim, senior vice president of Sony Pictures’ VR group, clarified to Variety. “This is us expanding the storyline into a new format. We’ve taken Groundhog Day and put it into a musical, now we’re putting it into an immersive experience.”
