In the midst of an unpredictable awards season, did Sunday’s SAG Awards clear up the Oscar race or complicate it further? In a word, yes.
On the one hand, Glenn Close (The Wife), Rami Malek (Bohemian Rhapsody), and Mahershala Ali (Green Book) followed up their recent Golden Globes victories with SAG wins, making them the presumptive frontrunners for the Academy Awards’ Best Actress, Best Actor, and Best Supporting Actor trophies, respectively.
On the other hand, Emily Blunt (A Quiet Place) won the SAG Award for Best Supporting Actress, but she’s not nominated for an Oscar, so that contest appears to be wide open. And what to make of Black Panther’s win for Best Movie Ensemble — could it foretell Best Picture success for the superhero hit?
Here to read those tea leaves and more is EW’s latest episode of The Awardist podcast, hosted by EW digital director Shana Naomi Krochmal. This week, Shana is joined by EW features editor Sarah Rodman and EW movies editor Katie Hasty to break down the SAG Awards and what they mean for the biggest showdowns heading into the 91st Oscars next month.
The Awardist podcast is part of EW’s comprehensive awards coverage, online and in the magazine. This week we’re also talking about EW’s own pre-SAG Awards party, SAG’s TV honorees, what’s going on in the Best Documentary Feature category, and what films are making noise at Sundance (and could be in the awards mix next year). And of course, it wouldn’t be awards season without some bold predictions.
