Donald Trump Jr. may be the butt of many jokes on Saturday Night Live, but he just made himself his own punchline.
Trump Jr. is a regular target of the NBC sketch show, now in its 44th season. Mikey Day plays him as a smug businessman opposite the childlike idiocy of Alex Moffat’s Eric Trump impression. So, one would assume that the president’s son is at least somewhat familiar with this cultural juggernaut — which his dad has hosted — that makes a habit of parodying the news and leading political figures.
But it turns out Trump Jr. appears not to know what the common abbreviation of the show, SNL, stands for. Trump Jr. retweeted a jab at the Democrats’ 2020 presidential platform, with the added note, “It’s almost like a funny version of an S&L skit,” apparently thinking the “N” in SNL stands for “and,” as others on the internet pointed out.
It’s an odd misapprehension on Trump Jr.’s part given he has frequently referenced the sketch show in past tweets and did appear to be a fan of the late-night series as recently as 2015. Old tweets show him referencing Darrell Hammond’s portrayal of his father, the infamous Christopher Walken cowbell sketch, and more.
Many comedians and SNL alums immediately jumped on Trump Jr.’s gaffe, with former cast member Bobby Moynihan calling him a “dummy.” Captain America himself also got in on the fun; actor Chris Evans tweeted out the error with his own response of “Live from New York, It’s Saturday Aaaaaaand!!!” See below for a sampling of tweets.
SNL will not air a new episode this Saturday, Feb. 2, but the show returns Feb. 9 and viewers will surely be tuning in to see if this makes the cold open or Weekend Update in some capacity.
