It’s been quite the career rollercoaster for M. Night Shyamalan. After emerging as a rising star in the early 2000s thanks to the smash success of The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, and Signs, things took a downward turn with critical and financial flops like The Happening, The Last Airbender, and After Earth. But then Split happened. The 2016 film was a surprise hit, and, even more surprising was the final-scene reveal of Bruce Willis’ cameo as his character from Unbreakable, connecting the two films and setting up Glass (out Friday), a sequel to both Shyamalan projects.
Glass is expected to dominate the box office this weekend, further continuing Shymalan’s big comeback. So, that got EW thinking about what directors could/should follow suit and connect two of their past films to make a new cinematic universe.
Damien Chazelle
The 33-year-old director only has four films under his belt, but Whiplash and La La Land set up perfectly to come together. Maybe Sebastian (Ryan Gosling) and Andrew (Miles Teller) are competing for the lead spot in a big concert after the position had previously been promised to Andrew by the event’s director.
Christopher Nolan
If you thought the job that Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his team encountered in Inception was tough then just wait until they must plant an idea in the mind of Memento‘s noted-amnesiac Leonard (Guy Pearce).
Kathryn Bigelow
Bring back Johnny Utah! Surely, Keanu Reeves’ memorable surfer FBI agent from Point Break could be a great asset to the CIA and Zero Dark Thirty‘s Maya (Jessica Chastain).
David Fincher
It’s finally time for Rooney Mara to get her revenge. After seeing her jerk ex-boyfriend Mark Zuckerberg (Jesse Eisenberg) became rich and famous, Erica Albright (Mara) moved to Sweden and became a computer hacker (makes sense since he made his money on the computer) named Lisbeth Salander. But with Facebook in the news for all their issues, the Social Network/Girl with the Dragon Tattoo sequel finds her getting payback on everyone’s behalf.
Quentin Tarantino
This one basically already exists, but it’s finally time that Tarantino makes The Vega Brothers, uniting Reservoir Dogs‘ Vic Vega/Mr. Blonde (Michael Madsen) and Pulp Fiction‘s Vincent Vega (John Travolta).
Spike Lee
I can’t be the only one that wants to see a prison movie from Spike Lee that stars Denzel Washington and Edward Norton. Well, we could have it if we follow the 25th Hour‘s Monty (Norton) once he begins his prison sentence and meet his new cellmate, He Got Game‘s Jake Shuttlesworth (Washington). They’d definitely bond during TV time as they watch Jake’s son Jesus (Ray Allen) play in the NBA.
Nancy Meyers
It’s time for another Holiday, so Amanda (Cameron Diaz), Iris (Kate Winslet), Graham (Jude Law), and Miles (Jack Black) are headed to a beach club in Mykonos, Greece, which is run by The Parent Trap twins Hallie and Annie (Lindsay Lohan).
Martin Scorsese
As practically the only person who didn’t die at the end of The Departed, Mark Wahlberg has been more than game for a sequel focused on his character Dignam. So, Marky Mark could get his wish with The Departed meets Goodfellas. Dignam has experience putting people undercover and he does it again when he comes across ganster-turned-protected witness Henry Hill (Ray Liotta).
Wes Anderson
The Royal Tenenbaums seem like a natural fit to stay at The Grand Budapest Hotel.
M. Night Shyamalan
Run it back, Night, because Will Smith being dead the whole time is the only excuse for making After Earth.
